What we pay for and why

Value on a cast coil transformer comes down to kVA, primary voltage, winding metal, age, and whether it still tests. New surplus on the skid is worth the most. Failed units are worth their metal and oil.

What drives the number on this unit

Manufacturer weight

ABB, Schneider, and Eaton cast coil resells into data center and hospital work. The brand on the resin is a price term.

Resin condition

Cracks, tracking, or discoloration on the cast windings are what an inspection looks for. Close-up photos of each coil face help the offer.

Matched sets

Redundant-pair installations produce matched takeouts, and pairs sell better than singles.

Light loading history

Most cast coil comes out of critical facilities that ran them at half load. If you have loading data, send it; it is worth money.

Reading the nameplate

Nameplate is on the enclosure frame. Photograph it plus each cast coil face through the enclosure. These units are bought heavily on visuals, so more photos is genuinely more money.

Freight and rigging

Comparable to MV dry-type but denser: a 1500 kVA pair can be 15,000 pounds of freight. Indoor removal from electrical rooms and penthouses is normal; send the route and we bring the plan.

FAQ

Yes. The core, windings, tank steel, and oil all carry value. Tell us the failure mode if you know it.
