ABB bought the transmission and distribution business of Westinghouse Electric in 1989, which put Westinghouse distribution and power transformer plants under the ABB name. The Jefferson City, Missouri plant that Westinghouse opened in 1972 is one of them and still builds liquid-filled pad-mounted and submersible transformers.
ABB bought Kuhlman Electric of Versailles, Kentucky from The Carlyle Group in August 2008.
Hitachi took an 80.1 percent stake in ABB's Power Grids business, transformers included, on July 1, 2020 and bought the remaining 19.9 percent in December 2022. That business has operated as Hitachi Energy since July 2021, so newer units from these plants carry the Hitachi Energy name.
ABB kept its electrification business and bought GE Industrial Solutions on June 30, 2018. GE Type QL low voltage dry-types now sell under the ABB name.
Reading the plate: Expect three names on the same family of equipment: Westinghouse on older units, ABB on units from roughly 1989 to 2020, and Hitachi Energy on newer ones. A GE Type QL catalog number such as 9T83B3872 can appear on either a GE or an ABB label.

Selling ABB equipment: what people ask.
Yes. Age does not stop a purchase. Older ABB units sell for spares, parts, or metal, and the nameplate tells us which.
Close enough for us. We buy equipment under every name ABB has carried, including ABB Inc, Asea Brown Boveri.
Oil-filled units built before 1980 may contain PCBs. We sample before an offer is final. We do not give disposal guidance on the web; call and a person will walk you through it.
Yes. Failed units are worth their core, windings, breakers, copper, and steel. Tell us what failed if you know.
Clear nameplate photos get a reply during business hours. A firm number may wait on inspection or testing.
Mixed brands on one job? Put them on one offer. We buy every manufacturer, including the ones that no longer exist.
