The nameplate on the head shows type, serial number and catalog number. Serial number breaks matter for parts (Eaton manuals split W at serial 7334). Photograph the nameplate (the catalog number includes the closing solenoid voltage code), the counter and the bushings.

How to read a Cooper Kyle Type W recloser catalog number.
Catalog 280-30 builds W-group catalog numbers in order: basic letters (KW for W, KVW for VW, KWV27 for WV27, KVWV27 for VWV27, KWVP for WV38X, KVWVP for VWV38X), series coil rating in amps, an X for X-type coils, the delayed curve letter (B, C, D or E, or A if all fast), number of fast operations, number of delayed operations, then the closing solenoid voltage code (for example 4 for 12.0 to 13.2 kV, 5 for 14.4 kV, 13 for 23.0 to 24.9 kV, 14 for 34.5 kV). The first example is printed in the catalog; the others follow the same scheme.
Not sure? Type it into the catalog lookup or text a photo of the label.
- Vacuum versions (VW, VWV27, VWV38X) are preferred over oil-interrupting versions.
- Higher voltage versions (27 and 38 class) are less common than 14.4 kV units.
- Counter reading, oil condition and complete bushings affect value.
- Units built before 1980 may contain PCBs; we sample before an offer is final.
- We do not publish prices. Metal, demand, and condition move them. You get a written number for your unit.
Eaton notes that most hydraulic reclosers use their interrupting oil for timing and counting, and the W group is the exception. The closing solenoid code in the catalog number must match the system voltage, so a W recloser pulled from a 12.47 kV system is not a direct swap onto a 34.5 kV line. The same tanks were built with electronic control as the WE and VWE family.
Three photos price most Cooper Kyle Type W recloser offers.
The label
The catalog number, straight on and in focus. For a pallet, one label per model plus a count.
The unit
Front, sides, and anything damaged. Doors open if it has them.
The lot
The whole pallet or shelf. New in box: the box labels.
The nameplate is on the recloser head or tank. Photograph it with the type, voltage, continuous current, and interrupting rating in frame. Photograph the control nameplate and the control face separately.
- 01Send the nameplate
Photos or a list with counts. Text, email, or the form.
- 02We read it and reply
During business hours, by whatever contact method you picked.
- 03You get a written offer
Per unit or per lot. A range if we need to sample or test, firm after. Freight is in the number.
- 04We pick up and pay
Our truck and our rigging. Wire or ACH within 3 business days of a passed inspection.
Freight: Single-phase hydraulic reclosers are light enough for a liftgate truck. Three-phase units and their frames need a forklift or crane. We plan it.
Selling a Cooper Kyle Type W recloser: what people ask.
The VW uses vacuum interrupters and the W interrupts in oil. Both are hydraulically controlled and rated 560 A.
Yes. We buy them in any condition. Units built before 1980 may contain PCBs; we sample before an offer is final.
Yes. Send photos of the units and mounting frames.
Both. New surplus, used, untested, and failed all sell. Condition sets the number, not whether we buy.
Oil-filled units built before 1980 may contain PCBs. We sample before an offer is final and handle the paperwork. We do not give disposal guidance on the web.
