How to read a ABB OVR and GridShield recloser catalog number.
OVR-3 style numbers start with R, then one digit each for maximum voltage (1 = 15.5 kV, 2 = 27 kV, 3 = 38 kV), BIL (1 = 110 kV, 2 = 125 kV, 5 = 150 kV, 7 = 170 kV), continuous current (5 = 630 A, 8 = 800 A, 1 = 1,000 A, 2 = 1,200 or 1,250 A), and interrupting rating (1 = 12.5 kA, 2 = 16 kA; the 2004 guide also lists 8 = 8 kA and 0 = 10 kA on 15 kV). The digits after the first five code the frame, cable, control power and options.

OVR reclosers use one magnetic actuator per pole, which gives single-phase tripping without linkages, and the bi-stable actuator holds open or closed with no power. The OVR-3 ordering guide specifies a 30 ft 24-pin voltage and current cable between recloser and PCD cabinet. ABB designed the GridShield position indicator cup as a retrofit for OVR units, which shows the two lines share a pole design. SEL lists the OVR-3 and VR-3S on a 24-pin interface with no SEL cable, while GridShield works on SEL 32-pin and 42-pin cables.
