How to read a Eaton MVS metal-enclosed load interrupter switchgear catalog number.
The MVS2-C switch inside the cell has its own catalog number. S2 marks the MVS2-C switch. The next two digits are voltage (05 for 5 kV, 15 for 15 kV). Next is the insulation letter (G glass polyester, E epoxy). Then current (06 for 600 A, 12 for 1200 A). Then fault-close (4 for 40 kA asym, 6 for 61 kA asym). Then a two-character option code (M1 120 Vac motor operator, M2 48 Vdc, M3 125 Vdc, IV inverted, NR non-removable handle, XX none) and a grounding code (G blade grounding, X none).

The MVS2-C switch has main blades and a flicker blade: on opening, the main blades disengage first while the flicker blade stays engaged, then the flicker blade opens. Many MVS2-C switches carry UL or CSA recognized component status. Eaton also made a smaller Mini-MVS at 5 kV and 200 A. The rating label on the mechanism cover is the fastest way to confirm voltage, current and fault-close without opening the high-voltage compartment.
