The VR-32 carries two laser-etched nameplates: one on the tank and a second on the control enclosure door. Photograph both, plus the position indicator on the cover, the control front panel (it shows the CL model), and the bushings. Read kVA, voltage, amps and serial number from the tank plate.
| Type | Single-phase, 32-step (+/-10%) step voltage regulator, oil-filled, pole, platform or substation mounted |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Cooper Power Systems, McGraw-Edison VR-32, Eaton VR-32, Eaton Cooper Power series VR-32, Cooper 32-step regulator |
| On the nameplate | VR-32 |
| Voltage ratings | 2,400 V (60 kV BIL) through 34,500 V (200 kV BIL), 60 Hz and 50 Hz |
| Regulation | 10% raise to 10% lower in 32 steps of about 5/8% each |
| kVA (60 Hz catalog) | 25 kVA through 833 kVA, with 416.3 kVA at 2,500 V and 5,000 V |
| Load current | About 25 A (19,920 V, 50 kVA) up to 1,665 A (2,500 V, 416.3 kVA) at +/-10% |
| Bonus capacity | 65 C rise insulation in a 55 C rise design adds 12% capacity, stated on the nameplate (for example 167/187 kVA) |
| Tap changer | Quik-Drive QD3, QD5 or QD8 on current units; older units use spring-drive or direct-drive tap changers |
| Control | CL-7 on current production; CL-2A, CL-4C, CL-5 series and CL-6 series on older units |
| Mounting | Pole brackets on units up to 250 kVA; substation base on 167 kVA and above |
- Rated kVA, voltage class and current rating set the starting point for value.
- A unit that ships with its control, control cable and cabinet intact is worth more than a bare tank.
- Newer CL-6 or CL-7 controls add value over CL-4C or CL-5 series controls.
- Oil condition, intact bushings, and an undamaged position indicator matter. Failed units are bought for core and copper or aluminum content.
- Units built before 1980 may contain PCBs; we sample before an offer is final.
- We do not publish prices. Metal, demand, and condition move them. You get a written number for your unit.
The ADD-AMP feature lets a VR-32 carry more current by narrowing the regulation range: limit switches in the position indicator have detents at 5, 6-1/4, 7-1/2, 8-3/4 and 10% regulation. The position indicator is graduated 1 through 16 on each side of neutral, and its drag hands record the highest raise and lower positions reached. Every VR-32 has a bypass arrester across the series winding, a 3 kV MOV on most ratings and 6 kV on units rated 22 kV and above. Internal potential winding taps and a ratio correction transformer let one regulator serve more than one system voltage, so the shipped connection matters when you read the nameplate.
Three photos price most Cooper VR-32 voltage regulator offers.
The nameplate
Straight on and readable. Voltage, ratings, model, and serial in frame.
Inside
Doors open: bus, devices, controls, and anything burned or missing.
The whole unit
A wide shot plus what is around it, so we can plan the pick.
The nameplate is on the tank wall. Photograph it straight on with the voltage, kVA, load current, and serial in frame, then photograph the control nameplate and display.
- 01Send the nameplate
Photos or a list with counts. Text, email, or the form.
- 02We read it and reply
During business hours, by whatever contact method you picked.
- 03You get a written offer
Per unit or per lot. A range if we need to sample or test, firm after. Freight is in the number.
- 04We pick up and pay
Our truck and our rigging. Wire or ACH within 3 business days of a passed inspection.
Freight: Single-phase regulators commonly run from roughly 1,000 to over 4,000 pounds depending on rating. They ride flatbeds and lift from the lifting lugs. We plan it.
Selling a Cooper VR-32 voltage regulator: what people ask.
Yes. Cooper Industries bought McGraw-Edison in 1985 and Eaton acquired Cooper in 2012, so McGraw-Edison, Cooper Power Systems and Eaton VR-32 regulators are one product line. We buy all of them, any year, any kVA.
Yes. We buy regulators with or without the CL control. Tell us which control model is on it, or that it is missing, and we price it accordingly.
We still buy it. Failed regulators are valued on the tank, core and coil, and copper or aluminum content.
Photos of both nameplates, the kVA and voltage rating, the control model, quantity, and the pickup location. Oil test results help if you have them.
Both. New surplus, used, untested, and failed all sell. Condition sets the number, not whether we buy.
Oil-filled units built before 1980 may contain PCBs. We sample before an offer is final and handle the paperwork. We do not give disposal guidance on the web.
